So… fancy winning yourself an all-expenses week on the slopes riding with the Animal pro-snowboard team? And earning yourself some ‘good citizen’ points to boot?
Cooler and Animal have teamed up to create one very special competition for Cooler readers – all you have to do is get your creative juices flowing in front of the camera (or video phone) and send it to coolermag.com when you’re done.
This year the Animal Snowcamp is going green – each week-long camp is being held at the Boardnlodge luxury Ecolodge in Bourg St Maurice – base camp to high altitude resorts Les Arcs, Val d’Isere and Tignes to name but a few, meaning the group will get to pick the best spots for the conditions each day.
From park to powder, campers will be trying things they never knew they could do – all under the watchful eye of the likes of half-pipe master Dom Harington, Olympic contender Kate Foster and freestyle geniuses Johno Verity & Sonia Shaw. Each week is hosted by two of the team who are a valuable resource of insider tips, advice on equipment or just helping out with mastering a new move. This year the snowcamp is spreading the Animal love and opening it’s doors to skiiers who will be in the good hands of Ben ‘Bungle’ Hawker.

All you have to do for a chance to win is put together a 30sec – 1 min clip of you, a snowboard or skis and something environmentally friendly – whether it be getting a ‘green’ message across, doing something to save the world with your skis or just finding a unique way to save our snow. To celebrate the eagerly awaited launch of DC Snowboards in the UK, the folks at DC are planning a legendary party in association with the Metro Show, SCUK and Funk Royale.
The DC Snowboards Launch party will be kicking off from 9pm til 2am on Friday 24th October. The festivities will be taking place at The Fire Station in Hammersmith, which will include the UK premiere of Mack Dawg’s ‘Double Decade’ snowboarding movie, along with some cranking beats from DC Musical Envoys, Funk Royale.

On the 17th October, Snow+Rock are teaming up with Helly Hansen and the Ski Club of Great Britain to present an exciting one-off lecture at the historic Royal Geographic Society in London.
Extreme skier and mountaineer Chris Davenport will present his ‘Skiing the World’s Greatest Mountains’ Talk, giving a visual tour of some of the world’s most famous peaks, chronicling his awe-inspiring skiing adventures around the globe.
“I am thrilled to finally have the opportunity to give my wonderful presentation about skiing the world’s great mountains to folks in the UK. I hope they will be as inspired as the many others I have spoken to over the years,” said Davenport.
Chris will be talking through some of his most memorable backcountry expeditions accompanied with stunning visuals from some of the world’s most famous peaks. See and hear the story of his personal challenge to become the first ever person to climb and ski all 54 of Colorado’s 14,000-ft peaks within one year.

Our good pals at Emu have come over all generous and agreed to send one lucky reader and friend to Australia to experience the ultimate road trip, and capture the trip as a photo story in Cooler. Amazing. All you have to do is send in the best travel photograph you’ve ever taken to . The winner, as chosen by surf photographer and regular Cooler contributor, Lucia Griggi, will be announced in Issue 17 of Cooler (on sale January 24 2009).
This amazing prize includes two return flights to Melbourne (to be taken February–March 09) and spending money of £1,000. Woo hoo! The winners will travel to Geelong, home of Emu, to pick up a pair of complementary Emu boots each, before heading to Bells Beach to begin their road trip. The photo story of their trip will appear in a future issue of Cooler. The runner up will win a pair of Emu boots.
Competition judge Lucia Griggi gives us her five top tips for shooting a road trip:
1. Get a cool, fun team together for the road trip.
2. Be spontaneous and don’t plan too much! Stay open to the opportunities the open road brings you, as locals may suggest places, which aren’t in your original plan or in travel guide books.
3. Think about the type of results you’re looking for – vintage bleached out shots, vivid nature shots, action shots and so on. Practice with your camera before the trip until the technical stuff comes as second nature. Also think about the time of day you’re shooting. But as mentioned before being spontaneous will also bring happy accidents and surprises.
4. If shooting on digital ALWAYS back up your images everyday, especially if you’re in remote areas. Remember to look after your kit at all times, as expensive gear can go walkies when travelling!
5. Most importantly Terms and conditions smile and have FUN!

The Wackness is a new film by Jonathan Levine, which recently scooped the 2008 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award.
Set in New York City in 1994, the film focuses on a city pulsing with hip hop. Much like the city, Luke (Josh Peck) and Dr. Squires (Sir Ben Kingsley) are at a crossroads: Luke considers himself semi-suicidal, bemoaning his high school social status and the fact that his family is on the verge of eviction; Dr. Squires and his rehab-addicted wife (Famke Janssen) can barely tolerate each other. The third Nissan Adventure Film Festival sponsored by Helly Hansen will be taking place between 15-23 September at Vue Cinemas around the country. Showcasing the very best feature-length films over five themed evenings, the festival will take arm-chair adventurers on a journey from the heights of Mount Everest to the shark-infested waters off the coast of South Africa.

Featured films include ‘Red Gold’, a David and Goliath story of one man’s battle against a mining corporation in Alaska; ‘Oil + Water’, an epic 21,000 mile journey from Alaska to Argentina by a truck run on natural vegetable oil; and ‘Beyond the Horizon’ documenting 2006 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Colin Angus’ record breaking round-the-world trip – the first ever made entirely under human power.
Other highlights include the world premiere of an episode of Discovery Channel’s ‘Deadliest Catch’ (Tuesday 16th, Ocean Adventure); ‘Stranded – the Andes Plane Crash Survivors’, a haunting movie telling the story of the 1972 plane crash through the words of the survivors themselves, as made famous by the film ‘Alive’ (Wednesday 17th, Survival Adventure) and ‘Sharkman’, following South African Mike Rutzen’s quest to overcome the negative perception of great white sharks by putting them into a state of ‘tonic immobility’, or hypnotic trance (Tuesday 16th, Ocean Adventure).

This summer the Billabong Girls Surf Days are back and once again they are totally free, so be there or be a crazy fool. And we have some sweet outfits to giveaway, read on to find out how...
Whether you’re a complete novice or an aspiring pro surfer get yourself down to the Billabong Girls Surf Days this summer. You’ll not only get free lessons, tailored to your specific level, by pros including Alana Brennan, you’ll also get advice on choosing the right board for you, selecting waves and surf etiquette.
You’ll start each day with a yoga warm up session to get you feeling all zen, and in between wave riding attend workshops on nutrition for surfing and the all-important environmental issues affecting the sport, finishing up with a hip-hop dance class to get you set for evening. You’ll be invited to model for the Billabong Summer 2008 fashion show, should you be so inclined. And on the Saturday night a special guest will play an acoustic set on the beach.
What to do

This winter, The Rip Curl Girls Tour is back, presented by Relentless energy drink. The girls-only freestyle ski and snowboard tour will be shredding up the best European ski resorts between January and March 2008.
You'll have the opportunity to experience freestyle lessons on the slopes and master freestyle tricks in the special snow parks, getting to grips with rails, boxes and kickers. The Rip Curl Team Pros will be on hand throughout to offer top tips on style and technique.
Once you've honed your skills, you will have the opportunity to take part in the ‘Tricks 'n' Fun’ competition - a three-trick contest held on the second day that offers up the chance to showcase your new skills and take home big prizes.
To celebrate the upcoming UK stops, hitting Milton Keynes SnowZone from 12-13th January and then Glasgow Braehead SnowZone from 26-27th January, those kind folks at Rip Curl have given us two fantastic sets of snow gear to give away! The Winter Nissan Outdoor Games by Columbia Sportswear is a multi-extreme sports event that takes place in Chamonix, France. A veritable feast of seriously hardcore winter sports, the event is made up of two types of competitions, film and sport, and will be taking place from the 14th – 17th February 2008.
The film competition
Five teams composed of the world’s best athletes, in skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering, paragliding and BASE jumping, will be challenged to create a film based on an original concept, that combines the performances of the athletes, with the creative and artistic dimension of a film competition.
The five teams have five days to film themselves freely, while practising their sports, within the Chamonix area. A public screening will take place at the end of the competition in the heart of the town.
The Sports Competition and Demonstrations
During the weekend an ice-climbing competition, featuring the best climbers, will be organised in the centre of town for public viewing.
Two one-hour long air shows will take place at the top of the glacier, featuring paragliding, speed flying, wing suits and BASE jumping.
First Prize
Columbia Sportswear is offering a four-day trip for two to Chamonix, so you can experience this amazing event. The prize includes flights, transfers, accommodation and lift pass. Winners will be treated to VIP access to The Outdoor Games, and an ice-climbing experience.
Runners-up Prizes
If you aren’t lucky enough to win, fret not, as Columbia Sportswear have offered up five jacket and pant combos to giveaway. The Prism Parka and Alexandria Pants, both pictured, boast Columbia’s usual hi-tec spec, and each combined outfit is worth £300.

“You can find the most amazing things when you choose to walk your own way,” say the people at J Shoes. Which is exactly what they’ve been doing with their signature artisan-style shoes. This season J Shoes asked London street artist and musician, Remi Roughe, to design their new ad campaign and produce this stunning one-off piece of work, ‘Foot Prints’, for their flagship store.
Cooler: Your roots are in concrete graffiti, how do you translate that onto canvas?
Remi: I try and retain an element of where I’ve come from in my graphic work and visa versa, so I design a hybrid. That’s not necessarily where it’s going to end up though, as everything I do is in constant turmoil with itself.
Cooler: Talk us through your design process.
Remi: Everything starts by hand – pencil and paper – then it can either go towards spray paint, digital or acrylic, whichever direction it needs to take.
Cooler: What was the idea behind the Foot Prints piece?
Remi: ‘Do the jaywalk’ was the brief, which is J Shoe’s manifesto. I had the idea of doing a guy painting a really large-scale wall but I didn’t know in what context. I was in my studio and found a pot of fluorescent pink acrylic, so I poured it on the floor stood in it, and it went from there. Those are my real footprints.
